STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY OF NOEL ALEXANDER

For immediate release (September 15, 2021), Noel Alexander passed away on Friday, September 10th at the age of 87. The dignity, resilience and strength he carried throughout life remained with him in his final moments.

Statement from the family: “Not only did he work tirelessly for the black community, he was also deeply dedicated to us. He was an exceptional husband and father and will be greatly missed”. - Molly, Noela and Kaela Alexander

Noel, like so many others of the Jamaican and African Diaspora, faced pioneering adversities. In meeting those challenges he employed abundant creativity and determination. From his humble beginnings in Jamaica to his community building and commitment to inter-communal solidarity in Canada, Noel was a champion of the Jamaican Diaspora and the wider Black Community across Canada. His contributions to the “la mosaïque québécoise'' has helped to integrate and elevate the lives of thousands of new Canadiens, Québecois and Montréalais. From his work alongside the SPVM to combat racial profiling, to his creation of Jamaica Day in 1980, which is now celebrated all over the world, Noel’s legacy will surely live on.

Noel lives on through his children Audri, Paulette, Sandra, Christopher, Latoya, Noella, and Kaela, grandchildren Claudia, Rhys, Elijah and great-grandchild Eden.
